Dragon Ball spans four decades, five TV series, and twenty-plus movies. Watching it wrong ruins reveals; watching it right is one of anime's great journeys. Here is the definitive 2026 order.
Main Canon Order
- 1. Dragon Ball (1986) — 153 episodes. Kid Goku, martial arts tournaments, the foundation everyone skips but shouldn't.
- 2. Dragon Ball Z (1989) — 291 episodes. Saiyans through Majin Buu. Alternatively watch DBZ Kai (167 eps) — same story, filler removed, better pacing.
- 3. Dragon Ball Super: Broly (movie) and Battle of Gods / Resurrection F — or just start Super, which retells the two films in its first arcs.
- 4. Dragon Ball Super (2015) — 131 episodes. God Ki era: Beerus, Goku Black, Tournament of Power.
- 5. Super Hero (movie, 2022) → Dragon Ball Daima (2024) — the latest canon entries.
Should You Watch GT?
Dragon Ball GT (1996) is a non-canon continuation made without the manga. Watch it after Z only if you are curious — Super has replaced it as the official continuation. Skipping it loses nothing.
Z or Kai — Which One?
- Kai if you want the story efficiently: tighter cuts, remastered, no filler.
- Original Z if you want the full 90s experience with iconic filler moments (driving school episode!).
